Ten Fun Ways to Stay Active this Summer

Summer – the sun is finally shining and the snow has melted away. What a great time to start a new exercise routine, without being confined to the indoors. National guidelines suggest that children under the age of 18 participate in 60 minutes of exercise daily. Adults should strive for about 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity weekly. For example, this could be 30 minutes of moderate activity 5 days per week or 25 minutes of vigorous activity 3 days per week. While some individuals enjoy routine exercise at the local gym, others like to avoid the gym at all costs. Luckily, the warm weather opens up a wide variety of fun activities that help you reach these physical activity goals.

    1. Ride a bike, rollerblade, or skateboard. These activities are great alternative aerobic activities, ideal for enjoying the long summer days.
    2. Go swimming. Cool off at the local pool, beach, pond, or lake. Swimming is easy on the joints, but gives both your muscles and your heart a workout. This can be especially beneficial for older adults experiencing joint pain.
    3. Go hiking. Find some trails in your area and explore. This is a great workout for your legs while you enjoy the sights that nature has to offer.
    4. Get out and play with friends. Organize a game of basketball, tennis, soccer, or even just a simple round of catch.
    5. Take a walk. If you are newer to the workout world, walking can be a simple first step. You can grab a friend or your dog to keep you company and provide support.
    6. Do yard work. Plant some flowers, start a vegetable garden, mow the lawn, or water the plants. Yard work is not only beneficial for your yard, but for your body too!
    7. Go boating. Rent a kayak, canoe, or paddle boat and enjoy a beautiful day on the water.
    8. Try online workout videos. YouTube features a variety of free workout videos online. There are also online workout programs available for purchase. This is an inexpensive way to workout in the comfort of your own home (or yard!)
    9. Bond with your furry friends. Dogs need physical activity just like we do. Give your furry pal a wrestle, play a game of fetch or tug-of-war, or go for a jog.
    10. Dance. Whether you have natural rhythm or two left feet, dancing can be a fun way to relieve stress and get your heart pumping.
